UKTC XI Ruleset released with a nod to the tournament’s heritage

Updated: Mar 28

The new season rules throw up fresh challenges when building a ruleset

UKTC, The Crown Jewels of British Blood Bowl, has always had a celebrated position in the calendar. It danced to its own tune and never really took the easier path of using the current Eurobowl or World Cup rulesets. Pipey, as TO, had a clear philosophy of approach when constructing his rulesets over the years and this was followed on from Haychdee last year.

The philosophy of the ruleset is a part of the heritage of the tournament and as the new TO I’m keen to reflect this in the rules for the eleventh edition of the tournament.

However, the new Season rules has ushered in changes to the rosters with fewer positionals, changes to gold costs and more. This means the traditional approach of tiers with a flat Team Gold and a Skills budget often characterised as ‘1150 and six skills’ creates spikes for certain races making them stronger than some other races that would typically be seen in the same tier. This means the approach to the rules will need to change to reflect these effects in the new Season’s rules.

What key themes are staying in the ruleset?

Faithfully transposing the ruleset completely is not easy when seen in the context of the new ruleset. However some key philosophical features will remain:

  • A wide selection of appealing races that can be seen as ‘competitive’ or as sometimes shorthanded as ‘all teams viable’ so that no team member feels short changed on their preferred race

  • No star players as befitting one of the competitive tournaments that prizes coach skill over dice variance

  • The option of stat increases for those in the lower tiers so if your heart desires an Ag2 Goblin Pogoer with all the shenanigans that comes with this then it’s still on the cards

The Red Pill or the Blue Pill - The Matrix is here!

The matrix ruleset was first popularised by Hovring over in Denmark as co-TO for the excellent Pier Bowl held in the summer in Copenhagen - a pairs tournament well worth making the trip for with its glorious position right by the sea and fantastic hospitality of the Danish community. The benefits of building a ruleset in a matrix are twofold:

  • The ruleset can be seen visually and is easy to take in what is being offered to a race by way of team gold and gold for skills

  • It allows for nuance taking into account that some teams need gold for their team build, but not as much for their skills budget or vice versa. It smooths out the spikes that the changes to the rosters and player costs have now created in the 2025 Season rules.

The ruleset has been built in consultation

Everyone has their own ideas for what makes a good ruleset, and ultimately what a ruleset looks like is down to the TO and what they’re aiming to achieve for their tournament - whether it’s a competitive meta, or fun-having mayhem. It takes all sorts to deliver an array of great tournaments, and it’s one of the beauties of Blood Bowl that we have a spectrum of such options.

UKTC is naturally on the more competitive end of the spectrum, with coaches from all over the UK and Europe coming to compete for the coveted title over the years. With that in mind, not only was I keen to maintain the philosophy of what’s come before but I consulted widely with experienced coaches all over the Blood Bowl community including Pipey, TripleSkull, JLeav and the T&T stable of coaches.

How the ruleset looks right now is thanks to their input. However it should be noted that with it still being a very new Season I’ll reserve the right to amend the tiering as potentially needed before finalising in early October, three months before the tournament. That’s not to say there will be sweeping changes, but more of an iterative tweaking here and there.

The Ruleset!

So I’ve talked at length about the philosophy and approach to the rules, perhaps you’d like to see what has been come up with! Below you’ll see the matrix and a summary of the key rules when building your squads. You can download and read the detailed ruleset and tournament summary here.

Team Building

  • Teams of four coaches may only have one instance of any race i.e. it’s not possible to field two Amazons within the team.

  • The tiering of races is presented as a matrix with Team Gold on the vertical axis and the tiering of Skill Gold available on the horizontal access, as outlined below in Table 1.1

  • The cost of primaries, secondaries, stacks and stat-ups are outlined in Table 1.2

  • Stacking: it is only possible to stack primary skills, not secondaries, and not with any stat-ups.

  • A single stat increase may be given in lieu of a skill. So it is not possible to give a player a skill and a stat increase.

  • There are no star players available for any race, as has long been UKTC tradition.
